Join us for this Semester’s Recitation Showcase

This has been an exciting semester for the LifeWords program. We’re currently meeting at two locations – Sherrill Hills Retirement Community and the Frank R. Strang Senior Center – and we’ll be starting a third site in August, at the Everrett Senior Center in Blount County!

Our students had the chance to explore a wide range of topics, discussing everything from WWII Victory Gardens to pregnancy and miscarriage, to the dynamics of family gatherings. This semester also marked the start of our Origins Poetry Project, in which students wrote poems that asked them to creatively represent aspects of their past, present, and future. This semester, students composed “Where I’m From” poems, which creatively portray life details central to their sense of self.

This semester’s Recitation Showcase will celebrate these achievements. Students will have the opportunity to share pieces of literature that are personally meaningful and to read their “Where I’m From” poems.

As always, LifeWords staff will be on hand to record these performances, making them available for family and friends and saving them for posterity . Indeed, we think of these performances as a literary legacy, as memorializing a part of ourselves we don’t often share.
